The first in a trilogy, Hocking’s novel Switched is a great YA fantasy read about a girl named Wendy who has never felt like she fit in anywhere. To make matters worse, her own mother tried to kill her when she was six years old, claiming that Wendy was a monster. One day at her new school, Wendy notices a quiet, handsome new guy named Finn. Little does she know that meeting Finn would change her beliefs about herself and would also change her life forever.

Hocking’s novel is a wonderful blend of fairy tale and real-life teenage problems. Right from the start of the book with the prologue, Switched grabs your attention and refuses to let go. The characters are full and likeable, especially the main character Wendy, who enables the reader to immediately identify with her and her struggles. The story line of the book is a new twist on the supernatural, dealing with the misguided ideas that mankind has with the storybook characters of trolls. Switched is a fast-paced story with lots of action and romance, along with a central theme of figuring out who you are and where you fit in.

Disclosure: I received this book free from Goodreads and St. Martin’s Griffin; however, this had no impact on my review.
